On reflections of this month’s first part of a wonderful testimony by Linda Cone, I cannot help but write about the very special love of mothers for their sons. And the special softness in the hearts of even the most hardened man for his mother. Over the years, Restoration Destination has received many, many calls from mothers looking for a safe, stable and ministering place for their sons to reside coming out of prison.
I have seen it in my own sinful past: at my very lowest, most embarrassing and shameful moment in my life in 2003, I called my mother from a jail, weeping and demoralized.
Whether in comforting or correction, the love of a mother for her son is a special love only God could have created. In John 19:26-27, as Jesus was at the very darkest hour of his crucifixion, “Jesus saw his mother… standing nearby.” It must be so hard for mothers to see their sons in such bondage and struggle in this sinful world. No greater example do we have than that of Mary.
She could have ended all of her son’s suffering by telling the Pharisees and Romans know that her son was conceived through Joseph and that He was not the Son of God. But, she did not.
She “stood by” her sinless son because not only was He her son, but more importantly, He was her Savior. She “stood by” Him for through Him the world would be saved.
Oh, the love of mothers for their sons. As great a gift of God this is for a child like me, God reminds us that His love is even greater for His children. It is “agape” love, an even greater love than that of a mother.
For it is written, “Eye has not seen, nor ear hear, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Cor. 2:9)
